city today. the castro, dolores park, here at the civic center. but the people trying to make a buck out here start telling me the rainbow colors aren't exactly turning to green dollar bills quite as easily as they had hoped at least not so far. the hot dog vendor is not completely happy. the face-painting lady says it's so so, so far. there are an extra one million people give or take here in san francisco for pride weekend one of the biggest tourist weekends maybe the biggest all year. the hotels are full. the restaurants are packed. no doubt about it. there's money being made. we couldn't find any studies on figures of how much money is left behind in san francisco after this week. but it's definitely a lot. still, it's always a struggle to make a buck especially if you're painting faces one at a time. >> about meeting people and sitting downed and talking to them and making sure that they have a good experience, too. so we don't make as much money as some vendors do but we do, you know, we do okay business.

[ laughter ] >> look at all those people. the weekend closures are part of a month long rime aimed at addressing gridlock complaints from people who live

on lombard. 280 will be shuttin again wednesday night northbound. caltrans will be replacing another hinge between cesar chavez and 24th street. traffic be detoured on 101 as per usual. the work is supposed to wrap up the following monday morning. police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a head-on crash that killed a woman and baby in concord. it happened around 11:00 last night. a police officer saw it happen, tried to save the baby, but the infant later died at the hospital. the woman died at the scene. five other people suffered major injuries but all are expected to survive. and a fire and explosion knocked an oakland apartment building off its foundation this morning. 17 people were displaced by the fire, no one though was hurt. but police are looking for two men witnesses saw walking away from the scene on 17th street. one of them reportedly had burns. investigators think some butane

canisters exploded causing the fire. oakland mayor jean quan is officially running for re- election. kpix 5's mark kelly on why she says she deserves four more years. >> reporter: in a packed auditorium, family at her side, oakland mayor jean quan officialsly announced she wants to run oakland again. giving herself this nickname after four years in office. >> the one thing that the mayor has to be is the chief defender of the city. if you can't stand up for the city you shouldn't run for the job. >> reporter: as chief defender she told the crowd that she has helped bring 7500 new homes to oakland. more than 1.3 million square feet of new retail, reform. police pensions and made the streets safer within three years. >> the city that was financially in really bad shape and now we are just fighting about where we're putting the surplus, that's a big change in three years. >> but with success has come confusion, too. take the on going oakland a's saga.

a vote was scheduled this week but two city council members pulled a no show. preventing the authority that oversees the coliseum from taking a final vote. the mayor preferred not to talk about the a's only saying this. >> you know, that was yesterday's story and we answered that. so i'm going to answer this. but we answered that yesterday. we're in negotiations. just because somebody says we're done when we're totally still negotiating doesn't mean that we're ready. >> reporter: quan faces a packed field of more than a dozen contenders this fall eager to kick her out of office. including councilmember rebecca kaplan. >> i am running for mayor of oakland. >> reporter: who threw her name in the hat just this month criticizing quan for trashed streets and what she is calling a lack of basic city services in oakland. >> she is not exactly been a major opponent to anything that i've done. right? and i'll put my record against her any day. >> reporter: in oakland, mark kelly, kpix 5.

a crowded field seeking the top office. the biggest challenger could be rebecca kaplan, former kpix 5 political analyst joe tuman and another city councilwoman libby schaaf. bay area congress wan nancy pelosi was in an unlikely place today. texas. and she is there to get a better understanding of the immigration crisis. there's been a surge recently of children going to alone and making it across the border illegally. since october, the border patrol has caught 52,000 of them. it's left lawmakers scrambling to find a solution. >> the fact is, these are children, children in families, we have a moral responsibility to address this in a dignified way. i wouldn't even say bipartisan. i would say nonpartisan way. >> pelosi plans to visit some of the crowded immigration facilities this weekend. still ahead, the gloves are coming off for good. why california food handlers

southern california. it all began when police deliberately burned down a mobile home in southern california. it all began when they found a 21-year-old man armed with a pipe bomb. then they found a slew of explosives in his cathedral city home. they say there was so many dangerous material the best way to get rid of it was to burn it down. neighbors were evacuated before the burn. no injuries. fireworks are now on sale in the bay area cities that allow them. and we found people making purchases this afternoon in newark one of the cities where it is okay. but with the drought, officials are warning to be careful even though the fireworks are called safe and sane. since it is so dry, they say it won't take much to spark a

wildfire. some cities like dublin allow people to light fireworks at public parks. and it's not too early to plan your 4th of july fun. after all, it's next friday. we have a complete list of bay area fireworks shows at kpix.com/fireworks. new tonight, governor brown has signed a measure repealing a new law that would have required california food handlers to wear gloves. the no hands bill was set to take effect on tuesday. it was intended to prevent disease transmission. but many chefs and bartenders worried it would slow down the food preparation process. they also said it might discourage food handlers from washing their hands. still to come, it's one of california's most popular seasonal snacks. but this year, it is going to cost you a bundle. ,, ,,,,,,,,

nasa's out of this -- look at this! isn't that cool? it's from nasa a success tonight. a giant silver balloon lifted an experimental flying saucer high up into the earth's atmosphere. decades after roswell, nasa is finally doing the flying saucer thing. it can travel at 4 times the speed of sound. the craft may eventually be used for missions to mars. several hours after liftoff the saucer came down crashing into the pacific. there were only a few minor problems during $150 million experiment such as the giant parachute bringing the craft back to earth didn't fully deploy. it's a billion-dollar industry for california. but this year's cherry crop is frankly the pits. it's the smallest harvest in more than 15 years.

it's not just the drought that's to blame. turns out it was just too warm this winter. >> you need to be cold enough during the winter to get full rest for the trees and we didn't get that this year. >> on a normal year we pack 50,000 boxes. this year 17,000. >> some growers didn't pick anything. in the weather department i wish we could cooperate in some meaningful way to be helpful to agriculture but as far as the eye can see there's not a drop of rain, nothing but seasonal weather, warming between now and monday and nice day under way today. fog and low clouds start out your saturday morning. right now as we look toward the golden gate bridge, uncharacteristically lately anyway, clear at this hour. fog and low clouds most of the week but right now mostly clear

skies and incidentally traffic looks to be moving smoothly. traffic and weather together. livermore more 81. in the city 69 degrees. san jose 74. still warm in santa rosa at 87 degrees. heading out tonight to do something fun weather won't be an impediment. it will cool down to the mid- 50s along the coast. by 8:00mild at the shore. if want to take the family out to pleasanton this weekend, alameda county fair, do it while you can, 90 degrees. it will be sunny and warm but that's just the kind of weather you need for a fair. and back in san francisco, the pride celebration looks good this weekend. tomorrow, it will be 70 at the civic center plaza. motorsly sunny and mild. so looking good all around as high pressure builds back in over the west coast and as a result the numbers come up a little as the pressure builds up. low pressure that kept us mild all week is heading east. so we'll look for numbers to

approach 100 degrees inland by monday. it will be milder than that near the shoreline and at the coast. the bay shoreline as opposed to the coast the but either way it's going to be warm. and monday. so temperatures warm right through monday. near 100 degrees inland by the start of the week and fog near the shoreline. but that's about it. otherwise, we are going to have plenty of sunshine around the bay area. hey, heading out and perhaps north to ukiah, way up on 101, about an hour and a half north of the bay area, 94 degrees at ukiah, 64 at eureka. fresno 102. 79 degrees at yosemite. 85 degrees at lake tahoe. nice. and at the monterey aquarium about 71 degrees. for tomorrow, the numbers aring to be coming up a little bit warming 3 to 5 degrees tomorrow. morgan hill to 90. 85 palo alto. san mateo 83. pacifica 70. half moon bay 82. milpitas 82. east bay warm, mid-90s at antioch and brentwood. closer to the shoreline closer

colombia and uruguay 28th minute and maybe the goal of the tournament so far. look at james rodriguez. boom with the left foot. upper left corner from the chest, the volley, ball never touches ground and rodriguez hammers it. his fifth goal of the tournament. and colombia wins 2-nil. they are in the quarterfinals for the first time ever. third round in wimbledon, serena and alize cornet. williams looking good early coming up aces wins the first set 6-1 but cornet coming back in the second set. this is set point. and the big finish takes the second set 6-3. the 25th ranked player in the world, she is french and she was dominant late in the match. here is cornet serving for the match in the far court. she will drop it short.
